The new Amazon Dashboard

I just went to Amazon to order a couple of books and noticed the new layout of the website. Not sure how new it is, but I hadn't noticed it until today. What really caught my attention was the new dashboard they added with links to all their 31 product categories. The concept is very similar to the dashboard I created while I was working on the Leaflink project. As you hover over the menu item (in my case, it was a mouse click and not hover), a small dashboard container opens up with a few links.

There is nothing new about this approach, as it is simply mimicing a drop down menu. It jut looks a little different. The only thing I didn't like about the Amazon version was the fact that the dashboard is white, which makes it hard to distinguish from the already white background. To solve this problem on my version, I actually fade the background by decreasing the opacity (see it in action). This makes the dashboard stand out a lot better.

I did a quick photoshop edit of how I would've done the Amazon dashboard to make it stand out more:

That would’ve definitely helped, but I think fading out the background (or blurring it if it were possible) looks the best. Adding a little drop shadow to that container also makes a big difference.

  • Or if the background for their pop-up categories wasn’t white..

..or if that div’s border was thicker or in a different color than their normal outlines.
